Cyndi Lauper Committed to Performing in NC to “Build Public Support” Against “Ba

Larry Busacca/Getty Images Cyndi Lauper won’t follow in the footsteps of Bruce Springsteen and Ringo Starr and cancel a scheduled concert in North Carolina in response to its recently passed “bathroom bill” legislation, which critics believe is anti-LGBT.

The singer, whose True Colors Fund works to end homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth, believes she can better fight the law by performing in concert in Raleigh on June 4, as planned, using it to rally against HB2.

In a statement released Wednesday, Cyndi said, “Sadly, once again, the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people have been trampled on with the recent passage of HB2 in North Carolina. Me and my team at the True Colors Fund have been closely monitoring the situation in North Carolina and support the efforts of the Human Rights Campaign, Equality North Carolina, and others to repeal HB2 in the upcoming legislative session. The pressure to repeal HB2 is building and it is beautiful.”

However, Lauper adds, “[T]he best way I know how to make a difference is what I have strived to do my whole life and that is show up for my family, friends, and fans in the LGBT community. So, for that reason I think the best way I can do my part is to turn my show in Raleigh on June 4th into an entire day to build public support to repeal HB2.”

Cyndi says she’ll donate all profits from the show to Equality North Carolina’s efforts to repeal HB2.

North Carolina’s “bathroom bill,” also known as House Bill 2 and the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act, was signed into law last month by Governor Patrick McCrory. It mandates that people must use bathrooms that match the sex that’s indicated on their birth certificates.

Tuesday, Governor McCrory signed an executive order that he said “clarifies” the law and also “provides new protections for North Carolina residents.” The order states, among other things, that the private sector can “establish its own restroom and locker room policies” and “non-discrimination employment policies for its own employees.”
