That changed when country star Brad Paisley brought the ex-Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman on stage for a surprise guest appearance.
Prior to the show, Paisley had taken to social media to tease that his Opry performance would be one to remember, and it certainly lived up to his promise. After Paisley played three of his own hits, he brought the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer onstage for his Grand Ole Opry debut.
“We’re going to play some music and you’re going to know these songs, so sing along,” Brad told the crowd, launching into the memorable CCR tune “Lookin’ Out My Back Door” and Fogerty’s solo hit “Centerfield.”
“I do want to tell you what an honor it is to be standing here,” John commented, while Brad responded by saying, “The honor is ours.”
When the audience jumped to its feet and insisted on an encore, Paisley quipped, “Do you know any more songs?” before he and Fogerty launched into the Creedence classic “Proud Mary.”
Fogerty previously collaborated with Paisley on a duet version of John’s song “Hot Rod Heart” that appeared on his 2013 studio album Wrote a Song for Everyone.
Meanwhile, John has a variety of upcoming North American performances lined up in the spring and summer. His next appearance will take place April 30 at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California.
