Mercury/UMeThe Allman Brothers Band‘s second studio album, 1970’s Idlewild South, will be reissued in various configurations on December 4 in conjunction with the 45th anniversary of its original release.  The record will available as a standard single CD, a two-CD Deluxe Edition and a Super Deluxe Edition featuring three CDs and a Blu-ray Audio disc.

Released on September 23, 1970, Idlewild South featured the classic “Midnight Rider” — co-written by Gregg Allman and Allman Brothers roadie Kim Payne — and the memorable Dickey Betts-penned tunes “Revival” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.”  The album marked the beginning of the group’s fruitful association with producer Tom Dowd, and was recorded in several locations, including New York City, Miami and the band’s adopted hometown of Macon, Georgia.

The album’s title came from the name the band members gave to the ramshackle cabin near Macon where they rehearsed and hosted parties.  So many people came and went at the cottage that it reminded the Allman Brothers members of New York City’s Idlewild Airport, which later was renamed John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The Super Deluxe Edition of the reissue includes a number of previously unreleased outtakes and alternate versions from the Idlewild South sessions, the group’s full April 1970 concert recorded at Cincinnati’s Ludlow Garage — which previously was released in abridged form in 1990 — and a Blu-ray disc containing high-def recordings of the original album and some of the aforementioned bonus tracks.

The Deluxe Edition, meanwhile, features the remastered album, some of the outtakes and alternate versions and the complete Ludlow Garage concert.

You can pre-order the Idlewild South reissues at Amazon and at The Allman Brothers Band’s Hittin’ the Note website.
