Danny Clinch; Ross HalfinZZ Top already had been scheduled to perform with Gregg Allman at two of the five traveling Laid Back Festival events Allman will host this year, and now the two acts have announced plans to team up for a series of U.S. shows later in 2016. The joint trek will run from an August 16 concert in Huber Heights, Ohio, through an October 7 performance in Las Vegas.
“The history with ZZ Top and Gregg Allman together goes way back to around the time the earth cooled,” says ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons. “The double lineup makes for a killer combination so buckle up and let’s have a party! Rock on!”
The gigs are just the tip of the iceberg for Allman, whose 2016 schedule also includes various headlining shows, joint concerts with Peter Frampton, and festival appearances, including the aforementioned Laid Back fest dates.
As previously reported, ZZ Top will play Laid Back Festivals scheduled for April 7 in Atlanta and September 25 in Morrison, Colorado. The other three Laid Back fests will take place June 25 in Nashville, July 16 in Chicago and July 23 in Wantagh, New York. The lineup of the Wantagh event recently was announced, and includes America and Marshall Tucker Band. Gregg will headline all five events, which also will feature fellow founding Allman Brothers Band member Jaimoe playing with his current group Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band.
Allman has four joint shows with Frampton that are all scheduled for late July.
