MVD Entertainment GroupA new documentary about Joe Strummer‘s time spent in Spain during the mid-1980s following the breakup of The Clash will be released on DVD in the U.S. on October 16. I Need a Dodge!: Joe Strummer on the Run tells the tale of what’s described as the late singer’s “self-imposed exile” in Granada, Spain, in 1985 and ’86, a period during which he worked with a number of local acts while trying to cope with the disintegration of his influential band.
Part of the film focuses on Strummer’s quest to find a Dodge to drive while he was in Spain, and what became of the car after Joe abandoned it to return home to the United Kingdom for the birth of his second daughter. Director Nick Hall traveled to Spain to interview some of the people who spent time with Strummer during his visit, in an attempt to discover the fate of the vehicle and gain some insight into what the punk legend was like at that volatile time in his life.
“This is Joe Strummer at a crossroads in his professional and personal life,” says Hall. “Initially his trips to Spain seemed to be little more than an anecdote but this story says so much about Joe coming to terms with life after The Clash.”
I Need a Dodge! also features appearances by Strummer’s first wife Gaby, late-era Clash members Pete Howard and Nick Sheppard, and Richard Dudanski, the drummer of Joe’s pre-Clash group The 101ers.
The DVD comes packaged with a cassette featuring a Spanish radio interview with Strummer, a sticker, a poster and a pin.
