Michael Ochs Archives/Getty ImagesThe Who‘s new concert movie documenting the band’s June 2015 show in London’s Hyde Park is set to be screened in U.S. theaters October 8. In a newly released excerpt from the film, seen here for the first time in the U.S., Led Zeppelin‘s Robert Plant and The Stooges‘ Iggy Pop recall the first time they each saw The Who perform.
“I was about 15 when I saw The Who hit,” Plant remembers. “They really kicked a** and they blasted the place to pieces. It was amazing. It was just so animated. Four guys were playing the most spectacularly exciting and electrifying music.”
Pop, meanwhile, recalls the time that The Stooges shared a bill with The Who at Detroit’s Grande Ballroom. “What made it so memorable was the kind of bubbling, insistent energy coming out of the big Leslie cabinet that [Who guitarist] Pete Townshend had, plus his ruffled shirt shaking and his body kind of quivering while he played his numbers, and Keith Moon doing the same restless energy on the drums,” Pop says.
The Who in Hyde Park focuses on the next-to-last U.K. show on the band’s 2015 The Who Hits 50! Tour, which included performances of classic songs like “Who Are You,” “My Generation,” “Behind Blue Eyes,” “Pinball Wizard,” “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” In addition to 19 Who performances and the interviews with Plant and Pop, the movie features interview segments with Townshend, Who frontman Roger Daltrey and former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr.
The October 8 screenings will take place at 7:30 p.m. local time at more than 360 theaters across the country and also will include a special feature focusing on London landmarks and locations significant to The Who’s early history. Visit the Fathom Events website for screening details.
