Santana Members Reunite at Journey Concert in Las Vegas

Photo: Robert M. KnightRock fans who attended Journey's concert this past Wednesday in at the Pearl Theater in Las Vegas got to witness a bit of music history -- a partial reunion of Santana's early 1970s lineup.  At the end of the show, Journey was joined on stage by Carlos Santana and his group's original singer/keyboardist, Gregg Rolie

For those who don't know, Journey guitarist Neal Schon was a member of Santana from 1971 to 1972, when he and Rolie departed to form Journey.  Rolie remained a part of Journey's lineup until 1980.  According to the Las Vegas Sun, Wednesday's reunion marks the first time Carlos, Neal and Gregg had performed live together since the latter pair's departure from Santana.

Journey and their two guests closed out the concert with an inspired version of Santana's classic instrumental "Soul Sacrifice," the same song the band is featured playing in the film documenting the 1969 Woodstock festival.  Meanwhile, A photographer who was in attendance at the show tells ABC News Radio that two other early Santana members, drummer Michael Shrieve and percussionist Michael Carabello, were hanging out backstage at the gig.

It's not too surprising that Carlos would join Journey at a concert in Las Vegas.  He lives in the city and also has been playing an ongoing residency at the House of Blues there.  As for why so many Santana alumni were in attendance, it could have something to do with an upcoming album Carlos has discussed in recent interviews that he says will feature many of the the group's early members.
