Steven Van Zandt Says “Music Is on the Back Burner,” Reports He's Focusing on Ne

Marion Curtis for NetflixWe most recently saw E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt last week when Bruce Springsteen and his group helped bid Jon Stewart farewell by playing on his last episode as host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show.  The performance marked the first time Springsteen has been seen playing with his band since their latest tour wrapped up in May 2014, and Van Zandt tells ABC Radio that he currently has no other musical plans with the Boss.

“Mostly music is on the back burner, kind of permanently, you know, until Bruce feels like going out and playing,” Van Zandt revealed at a red carpet event in New York City this week.

Steven maintained that his main focus now is to get involved with a new television project, since his Netflix series Lilyhammer was recently canceled.

“We’re out there looking and I got a couple of treatments I’m working on,” he said.  “And [I’m] trying to create a show also.”

Van Zandt told ABC Radio that his lead part in Lilyhammer — that of a mobster named Frank “The Fixer” Tagliano who moves to Norway after entering the FBI’s witness-protection program — was his “dream role.”  Netflix announced last month that it was canceling the series after three seasons.

As for getting the chance to play on Stewart’s final Daily Show, Steven said, “That was nice, you know?  It was an honor.”  He added, “We’re gonna miss him.  He’s really quite an important guy.”

Meanwhile, Van Zandt does have at least one more music-related event on his calendar: He’ll be performing with legendary pop/soul singer Darlene Love at the September 12 release party for her new album, Introducing Darlene Love, at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, New Jersey.  Steven produced and arranged the record, and also wrote three songs that appear on the album.
